Uruguayan economy in foreign hands, says candidate

Montevideo, Sep 18 (Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan economy is subjected to the interests of large international capitals, the union leader and candidate for deputy for the next national elections, Federico Kreimerman said today.

A well-known activist for the defense of water as a human right and other popular causes, Kreimerman is seeking a seat in the Chamber of Deputies on the basis of an alliance between the Workers’ Party and the Frente de Trabajadores en Lucha.

According to statements to Diario La R, the current economic model in Uruguay favors multinationals “to the detriment of our natural resources”.

He referred to how the cellulose and forestry management plants are part of this scheme of a foreign economy in which 85 percent of the fields dedicated to soybean production are in foreign hands.

Kreimerman criticized the role of free trade zones which exonerate millions of dollars in taxes in foreign hands.

He also cited the exonerations granted for two billion dollars to cellulose plants.

He stated that the newest of the UPM consortium’s paper mills consumes 20 times more water daily than the entire population of Montevideo.
