The legislation, considered a conquest by women’s organizations, was enacted in 2017, during the second term of President Michelle Bachelet (2014-2018).
Figures released by the Ministry of Health this Friday, indicate that out of the total number of women who have undergone this procedure, 1,163 did so due to sexual violence, 1,349 because they were at risk and 2,041 to deal with problems stemming from pregnancy.
Before the so-called law on abortion in the three cases came into force, abortion was criminalized, as established by the dictatorship (1973-1990) shortly before the head of the regime, Augusto Pinochet, left power.
Last June, the current government announced that in the second half of the year it will present the National Congress with a project to decriminalize abortion beyond the current limits.
