UNHCR launched an appeal to raise $21,4 million by the end of 2024, which will enable the intensification of response and prevention efforts in countries affected by the epidemic, particularly the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
This is the nation with the highest number of Mpox patients, but also one of those that is home to more people who had to flee their homes due to armed conflicts.
Through a press release, UNHCR requested the support of the international community in order to help nearly 10 million forcibly displaced people and host communities in 35 African countries.
They specified that at least 88 cases of Mpox have already been reported among refugees in Africa, 68 of them in the DRC.
According to the agency, Africa is home to more than one-third of the world’s forcibly displaced people, many of whom live in countries where Mpox is transmitted and are in extremely vulnerable situations.
