Venezuela’s Speaker calls for severing ties with Spain

Caracas, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) The Speaker of the Venezuelan National Assembly (Parliament), Jorge Rodriguez, said on Wednesday he will request the Government to break diplomatic and commercial relations with Spain, in view of Madrid's intervention in internal affairs of the Bolivarian Republic.

Rodriguez suggested halting flights between both countries and immediately cancelling all business with companies of the European country, after rejecting the “rude and interfering decision” by the far-right wing in the Spanish Congress of Deputies of ignoring the electoral triumph of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

The head of the Venezuelan Parliament slammed pretensions to recognize as President of Venezuela the former opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez, now exiled in Spain, describing this position as “the most brutal outrage” against the nation.

“We, respectful as we are, do not meddle in the internal affairs of any country; therefore, this outrage is unacceptable and immediately creates an anti-Venezuelan climate and generates this mendacious and false climate against Venezuela, it is unacceptable,” he added.

Rodriguez was joined by other local authorities, who condemned the stand by the Spanish legislators, also prompting the First Vice President of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello, to reaffirm that Venezuela “ceased to be a colony more than 300 years ago.”
