New right-wing attacks seek to remove Gustavo Petro from office

Bogota, Sep 9 (Prensa Latina) Attempts to strip the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, of his constitutional immunity reveal today the strength of the new attacks of the right-wing sectors to remove him from power.

The maneuvers carried out by the National Electoral Council (CNE) against the president are not new and allude to an alleged violation of the ceilings of the financing of his 2022 campaign.

For months the ruler has been denouncing the attempts to remove him from the Casa de Nariño with all kinds of stratagems devised by a magistrate of that body of dubious reputation and pending cases with the country’s justice system, such as Hernán Prada.

Given this circumstance, Senator Iván Cepeda questioned in social media what impartiality could an investigation conducted by a person called to trial for allegedly having bribed witnesses in complicity with former President Álvaro Uribe (2002-2008) have?

Petro has rejected time and again the arguments being used to pave the way for his eventual impeachment.

“It is a Coup d’Etat what they are planning against the people and against the president. It is as simple as that. And they are pawning the money of the powerful and the mafia for it, including assassination plans”, he sentenced.

And it is, -he continued-, because neither the President exceeded the electoral ceilings, nor the NEC has competence, especially when a ruling of the Constitutional Court affirmed that such instance would only have investigative power 30 days after the elections were held.

He also reminded that the NEC, in the month after the elections and in an administrative act, affirmed that the ceilings were not violated.
