HR Mission denounces atrocities and demands arms embargo in Sudan

United Nations, Sep 6 (Prensa Latina) The Independent International Fact-Finding Mission, appointed by the UN for Sudan, called for an arms embargo in the country, denouncing the total impunity with which the rival forces act in the conflict.

In a report released here, the experts compiled testimonies of large-scale, indiscriminate and direct attacks including air strikes and bombings against civilians, schools, hospitals, communication networks and vital water and electricity supplies.

Such a context, they warned, indicates a total disregard for the protection of non-combatants.

According to the report -the first by the rapporteurs- responsibility for the grave violations lies with both sides and their respective allies, many of which constitute international crimes.

The Independent Mission was formed in October 2023 by the UN Rights Council, tasked with analyzing the state of fundamental guarantees in the midst of the protracted conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Although the Sudanese government refuses to cooperate with it, the panel of three rapporteurs was able to gather first-hand testimonies from 182 survivors, family members and eyewitnesses.
