The Salvadoran Foundation for Economic and Social Development (Fusades) in an investigation on the subject, found that for every dollar received by a man, a woman only gets 89 cents for equal work, which shows that the wage gap widens as they occupy higher positions.
The disparity between the two sexes occurs mainly in low-complexity jobs, such as services and commerce, according to the entity. In this regard, Marjorie Chorro de Trigueros, Director of the Legal Studies Department of Fusades, reiterated this difference between women and men.
In addition, females have fewer opportunities in the labor market than males. In that sense, the 2020 Household and Multipurpose Survey (EGPM) showed that 81% of working-age men do so, while only 50% of women are in the labor market.
The foundation’s research states that the last Global Gender Gap Index, published by the World Economic Forum (WEF), detailed that El Salvador is one of the five countries that fell the most in the last year, dropping 28 steps in the gender gap in 2024 and ranked 96th out of 146 countries.
In other areas such as education, health and economy in the country, the gap between men and women has widened, showing sectors where there is a setback in gender equity, detailed Chorro de Trigueros.
