With the appointment of former chief negotiator of the European Commission with the United Kingdom for the Brexit, the president seeks to ease tensions and criticism, more than 50 days after he accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, after the officialist setbacks in the European elections of June and the legislative elections of July.
Barnier, presented as a conciliator, will be entrusted with the task of forming a government, in a context marked by the claim of the bloc of left-wing parties of the New Popular Front for the right to govern, being the force which obtained the most deputies at the polls (193), although far from the absolute majority in the National Assembly (289).
According to the press media, the new Prime Minister declared himself “well focused” for future missions.
There are expectations as to whether the new government will last, given the possibility of a motion of censure to overthrow it in the National Assembly, where there are four camps far from an absolute majority: the left, the ruling party, the extreme right (National Rally) and the conservatives.
Macron is also expected to explain his decision to the French in the coming days.
