San Salvador, Sep 3 (Prensa Latina) El Salvador faces a severe housing and overcrowding problem, a United Nations Development Program (UNDP) study reported.

The study entitled “Socioeconomic Map: Guide for the New 44 Municipalities of El Salvador,” aimed at helping the government identify and address development challenges, showed that at least 38 out of every 100 families in the country live in overcrowded conditions, with municipalities such as Sonsonate North with 60.7 percent of the housing problem.

Local media recently reported how families in the country are living in cemeteries and improvised sites due to the impossibility of finding decent housing.

The 38-percent average of overcrowding is based on three or more people per room exclusively for sleeping. However, there are cases in some municipalities where the percentage is higher.

Carlos Milla, mayor of Ahuachapan Centro, quoted by the press, said he has been looking for options to help the three families living in the cemetery. One of the situations they find is the value of land in the district that is high due to tourism.

Regarding the need for housing, a study revealed that almost 80 percent of Salvadorans live in inadequate conditions.

Statistics show that 52.5 percent of households in rural areas live in overcrowded conditions and that this condition in urban areas reaches 31 percent.
