UN envoy hails vaccination truce and slams killing of civilians in G

Ramallah, Sep 2 (Prensa Latina) The UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Tor Wennesland, today hailed the humanitarian truce agreed to facilitate polio vaccination, while condemning the killing of civilians in Gaza.

Following his recent visit to the enclave, Wennesland recalled the extensive reach of destruction in Gaza and the growing humanitarian needs hovering over Gazans, including the resurgence of poliomyelitis after 25 years.

Civilians continue to suffer the consequences of this conflict, he said, as he chastised Israel for having massacred more 40,000 people in the Strip.

Wennesland confirmed he had met with UN agency representatives, shortly after the agency denounced unprecedented limitations and risks stemming from continued Israeli evacuation orders.

The UN staff, he added, are working tirelessly under extremely difficult conditions.

“Their commitment and courage in providing critical support to those in need is truly commendable,” he added in a statement.

The diplomat insisted on his call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, as well as for strengthening negotiations that would allow for the immediate release of all hostages.

“An agreement is essential to save lives, reduce regional tensions and allow the United Nations, in cooperation with the Palestinian Authority, to accelerate efforts to address the pressing needs of the population of Gaza,” he stressed.
