Cuba includes pneumococcal vaccine in immunization of infants

Havana, Aug 30 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's Health System authorities announced they will start applying the Pneumococcal vaccine Pneumosil 10- to all infants born this year.

Lena Lopez, director of the National Immunization Program of the Ministry of Public Health, explained that all infants born between January 1 and June 30 of this year will be vaccinated, which means approximately 27,500 infants, according to Granma newspaper.

Likewise, those born in July who reach two months of age, the date established for the first dose in the vaccination schedule to be administered, will be immunized, she said. A first dose will be applied and after two months the second one, and seven months later a third booster dose.

The official emphasized that the adverse effects that can occur with this vaccine are common: muscular discomfort, reddening or inflammation of the site where the injection was administered, slight fever or fever, and there is a very low risk of presenting allergic reactions.

During the first week of September, the heads of immunization and of the Mother and Child Program will be trained on the characteristics and methods of application of Pneumosil 10 valente, with the participation of experts from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

According to the specialist, the vaccine is the most effective measure to prevent the disease.
