Japan tastes a long sip of García Márquez’s solitude

Tokyo, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) “One Hundred Years of Solitude”, the iconic novel by Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez (1927-2014), as well as the Netflix series under the same title, have been making waves in Japan’s culture life of the last few years.

The Japanese paperback edition of the Nobel Literature laureate’s magnum opus has so far sold 290,000 copies in eight weeks, a figure close to that of the three hardcover versions printed in the past 52 years.

Besides distributing it in low-price format to readers who will watch the Netflix series, we wanted to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Gabo’s death by bringing his literature back to life again, said Ryo Kikuchi, promoter of the new edition of the novel, first published in Japan in 1972, by his printing house (Shinchosha).

Directed by Alex García López and Laura Mora, the screen adaptation will be launched this year, featuring a carefully selected cast and under the guidance of the writer’s family, after having garnered accolades from potential viewers.

A preview of the series will be screened at the Hay Festival Segovia, scheduled from September 12 to 15 in Segovia, Spain.
