In a statement, the organization’s office in Kabul disclosed that more than 850,000 children of the total figure will need treatment.
The fund indicated that the European Union recently contributed 13 million Euros to be earmarked for education and treatment of malnourished patients.
As part of relief efforts, Unicef will purchase 62,000 boxes of ready-to-use therapeutic food and will train 1,600 health workers in the treatment of severe acute malnutrition among children under five years of age, according to the note.
In addition, the UN entity will improve the quality of teaching in 275 communities, thus enabling 9,500 minors (61% girls) to access primary education. Such endeavor will extend to training teachers and school management committees, as well as delivering supplies to schools.
According to the Afghan Ministry of Public Health, since the beginning of this year, 358,000 cases of severe malnutrition and 185,000 cases of moderate malnutrition have been registered throughout the country.
The Unicef statement also mentions that 23.7 million people in Afghanistan, more than half of them children, will need humanitarian assistance this year.
