Beijing rejects likely Canadian tariffs on Chinese cars

Beijing, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) China on Tuesday rejected and described as protectionist Canada's announcement to impose tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian stressed that this measure ignores objective facts, disregards the World Trade Organization (WTO)’s rules, and goes against the historical trend.

“It not only harms China-Canada economic and trade relations, but also harms the interests of Canadian enterprises and consumers, and does not contribute to Canada’s green transition process and global efforts to fight climate change,” Lin added.

The spokesperson pointed out that subsidies cannot create industrial competitiveness, and protectionism protects what has been left behind.

Lin Jian noted that China’s electric vehicle industry has developed rapidly thanks to continuous technological innovation, a perfected supply chain system, and “full market competition.”

The Foreign Ministry urged Canada to respect objective facts, abide by WTO rules, and immediately correct its “wrong practices.”
