The action took place last Sunday and caused the death of two officers and injured three others in this capital.

The Nigerian Police spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, released the information in a statement published Tuesday by local media.

The attack was carried out against the police checkpoint with bladed weapons and improvised explosives. Three police patrol vehicles were also set on fire.

The Nigerian government recently reaffirmed its determination and commitment to tackle insecurity and assured its full support to the military forces fighting criminal gangs in the country.

In recent times, the Army has neutralized more than 100 members of armed Islamist groups and numerous hostages have been released.

Islamist factions such as Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State in West Africa, are active in eastern Nigeria, and insecurity has spread to areas in the center, north and northwest, raising alarms about the possible expansion of these terrorist and criminal networks.
