Venezuelan Prosecutor’s Office again subpoenas Gonzalez

Caracas, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) The Venezuelan Prosecutor's Office on Monday for the second time subpoenaed former opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez, as part of an investigation for allegedly committing six crimes related to the presidential elections on July 28.

According to the official entity, the politician must appear on Tuesday, August 27, at 10:00 a.m., local time, before an office of the Prosecutor’s Office in Caracas, since he did not appear following the first summons due for this Monday.

The hearing intends to have the right-wing coalition Unitary Democratic Plataform (PUD) leader respond for charges of usurpation of official functions, counterfeiting an official document, public incitement to disobedience of the law, cybercrimes and criminal conspiracy.

As explained by the Attorney General of the Republic Tarek William Saab, Gonzalez must “respond in relation to the facts” that are currently being investigated by the official entity regarding the publication and maintenance of the PUD website, in which he claims to have 83.5 percent of the tally sheets.

The authority indicated that the opposition politician must speak “in a consequential and successive manner, of his responsibility before, during and after July 28, for his stubbornness, and his contempt of the authorities.”

Saab emphasized the mandatory nature of the summoning for González, whose whereabouts are unknown as of now. If not showing he may be punished with up to 16 years of imprisonment.

Gonzalez, the PUD and some foreign governments do not recognize the electoral victory of President Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela, although first the electoral authority the national Electoral Council of the country, and then its Supreme Court of Justice validated the results of the elections.
