Law gives Australians right to disconnect from work

Canberra, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) Australian workers will be able to disconnect from their work obligations outside their working hours, under a law that came into force today in the territory down under.

The Right to Disconnect Act, passed by Parliament in February, aims to improve the health of employees and establish a balance between work and private life.

Under the law, workers in companies with 15 or more employees may refuse to answer or follow up on e-mails or phone calls from their bosses or others connected to their workplace.

Failure to comply with the law is punishable with high fines for the employer and the company, as the amounts to be paid can reach up to five figures in U.S. dollars.

Countries such as France and Spain, among others in the European Union, have digital disconnection laws with the goal to guarantee a better quality of life for workers.
