According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, during the meeting key topics will be addressed such as the socioeconomic integration of migrants, the strengthening of economic development in border communities and the protection of strategic ecosystems, especially in the Darién region.
The Ministry added that it will also be a space to explore proposals with a view to expanding legal immigration channels, protection mechanisms, cooperation in the exchange of information between immigration authorities and against human trafficking.
The meeting follows the celebration of the National Dialogue on the Darién area, held this Sunday in Cartagena, and the Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luis Gilberto Murillo, will participate.
As part of the working sessions of the mechanism, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Colombia and Panama, Javier Martínez-Acha, traveled to Necoclí, in the northwest of the country.
These authorities’ visit to the region allowed local communities to share their observations on the impact of migration and the operation of the Comprehensive Plan for Attention and Accompaniment to the Darién region (PIAAD), which seeks to improve migration management and ensure a more humanitarian response.
