China and US get ready for high-level talks amid tensions

China-EEUU-1
Beijing, Aug 25 (Prensa Latina) China and the United States will address bilateral relations, sensitive issues amid renewed tensions and international issues of mutual interest, the Chinese Foreign Ministry informed on Sunday.

The statements were in connection with the announced US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan’s visit to Beijing from August 27 to 29 for a new round of strategic talks between the two powers.

According to the head of the America Department at the Foreign Ministry, the head of Chinese diplomacy, Wang Yi, will hold talks with Sullivan as part of an agreement between the leaders of both countries in Bali in November 2022.

Despite maintaining communication in diplomatic, economic, security and climate change areas, tensions continue due to the US policies of containment and pressure on Beijing, which have generated rejection by China.

Both countries are expected to review the progress in the implementation of the San Francisco Summit agreements between the main leaders of each nation and use more than 20 established dialogue mechanisms to delve deeper into key issues.

According to the Foreign Ministry, China will reaffirm its position on issues such as Taiwan, its development rights and its strategic security.

In particular, Beijing will stress that the United States must adhere to the “one China” principle and fulfill its promise not to support “Taiwan’s independence.”

In addition, China will demand an end to the politicization of economic and trade issues, as well as unilateral measures that harm national interests.

On international issues, the spokesman reiterated China’s position in favor of a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine, defended China’s moves in the South China Sea, and supported the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights.

The official also rejected Washington’s accusations that China poses a threat to the international order.

In this regard, he reiterated Beijing’s commitment to peaceful development, cooperation, and respect for the international system based on the United Nations.

Wang Yi and Jake Sullivan have already held three rounds of strategic talks in Vienna, Malta and Bangkok, but this is the first time in eight years that a US National Security Advisor will travel to China.
