ARGENTINE PICKETS REBUFF MILE’S ADJUSTMENT PLAN

Buenos Aires, Aug 23 (Prensa Latina) Argentine “piqueteros” (pickets) and cooks from soup kitchens gathered today near the Ministry of Human Capital to denounce the Government’s adjustment implemented, which is heralding dire consequences for the poorer population.

Under the slogan “100 pots against hunger”, the protesters headed for the intersection between 9 de Julio and Moreno avenues here, and demanded the delivery of food to the institutions that serve locals most affected people by the socioeconomic situation.

They also demanded more social programs, the release of people imprisoned for participating in protests against Government policies and a holt to judicial persecution of social organizations.

“In eight months, Javier Milei’s government has trampled on the rights of children, grandparents, workers and young people. The United Nations Children’s Fund has just disclosed that there are seven million poor children and one and a half million go to bed without dinner,” says a statement released by the Front.

The group recalled that that almost 60 percent of the population is surviving below the poverty line and 10 million are destitute.

Adding to such scenario are numerous dismissals and thousands of layoffs have been planned before the end of the year.

Soup kitchens, the document complained, cannot respond to the growing needs of the population due to the government’s refusal to deliver food, and would rather let it rot in official warehouses.
