South African national health laboratory recovered after cyber-attac

Pretoria, Aug 22 (Prensa Latina) The operations of South Africa's National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) are now fully restored after a cyber-attack last June.

According to a statement issued today by Deputy Minister of Health Joe Phaahla, the Ministry thanks the NHLS for its swift and tireless efforts to restore its laboratories to full operational capacity, following a successful and comprehensive rebuilt of its information technology systems and infrastructure.

More than 70 percent of healthcare decisions depend on those services, he recalled, so the restoration of operations is a commitment with the country’s public healthcare attention.

The NHLS is described in the text as the backbone of South Africa’s public health, whose networked system serves more than 85 percent of the country’s population through 230 laboratories, playing a critical role in clinical outcomes and patient diagnosis.

Phaahla also welcomed NHLS’s commitment to invest in advanced cybersecurity technologies and implement new protocols designed to improve the security and resilience of its digital infrastructure.

At this time, according to the document, NHLS’s structure is being strengthened to ensure that any future challenges are met with minimal disruption to its essential operations, ‘enabling it to continue to provide critical healthcare services to the country with confidence and integrity.
