Uruguayans vote in favor of nighttime police raids

Montevideo, Aug 20 (Prensa Latina) With the issue of insecurity as the greatest citizen concern, the majority of Uruguayans are in favor of enabling nighttime police raids.

This is an item that will go to a plebiscite on October 27, coincidentally with the presidential and parliamentary elections.

In its current articles, the Constitution proscribes such police procedures at night.

However, a survey by Equipos Consultores found that 69% of those polled are in favor of the measure, 25% were negative and six percent said they had no opinion on the matter.

According to the survey, among voters of the government coalition and also among those who present themselves as “undecided”, the number of people in favor of night raids is higher compared to voters of the opposition Frente Amplio.

“Historical experience with plebiscite initiatives shows us that the climates of opinion around these tend to be more volatile than partisan preferences,” Equipos warned.

The issue is present in the current electoral campaign and included in a series of proposals to the government presented by the presidential candidate of Cabildo Abierto, Senator Guido Manini.

The day before Manini asked the Executive to declare a security emergency for 120 days, in order to tackle the recurrent violence and homicides, particularly in neighborhoods of this capital.
