Panamanians recall friendship between Fidel Castro and Omar Torrijos

Panama City, Aug 14 (Prensa Latina) On the occasion of the 98th birth anniversary, a ceremony full of symbols on Tuesday recalled the friendship between the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro (1926-2016), and Panamanian General Omar Torrijos (1929-1981). Next to a Guayacan tree, planted in November in the gardens of the Foundation that bears the name of the military and former Panamanian President Omar Torrijos, members of the state mission, solidarity groups, Cuban residents, students and representatives of social organizations praised the humanist work of Fidel.

In his remarks, Cuba’s Ambassador to Panama Victor Cairo stressed that Fidel Castro represents the most patriotic and autochthonous values of Latin American and anti-imperialist thought, a defender of truth, revolutionary ethics, and the just and noblest causes of humanity.

In addition, he evoked the statesman as a master of words and political communication. “In each of his speeches and reflections, he transmitted a method of revolutionary analysis that contributed to the masses to interpret the national and international reality,” the diplomat remarked.

Cairo further exalted that Fidel’s spirit and faith in victory are present in the Cuban people, who struggle daily to overcome the cruel blockade imposed by the United States for more than six decades.

In his opinion, the ambassador explained, Fidel Castro symbolizes the struggle of the people for a better world, for the emancipation of the poor, for independence, and for human dignity.
