Mpox declared a Public Health Security Emergency in Africa

Addis Ababa, Aug 14 (Prensa Latina) The African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) officially declared the current outbreak of Mpox as a Continental Public Health Security Emergency.

The disease caused by the simian pox virus has common symptoms that include rash or mucosal lesions lasting two to four weeks, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, lack of energy and swollen lymph nodes.

It is transmitted to humans through physical contact with an infected person, contaminated materials or animals carrying the infection, a statement released by Africa CDC on its X social network account said.

The statement issued, the first of its kind issued since the creation of the African Union’s public health agency in 2017, will enable the mobilization of resources in affected countries, unlock essential funds, strengthen risk communication and community engagement.

Similarly, it will boost surveillance and laboratory testing efforts and enhance human resource capacities to effectively respond to Mpox through the One Health approach.

Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya, MD, emphasized the urgency of swift and decisive action by educating communities and providing life-saving interventions where they are needed most. In his view, travel restrictions are not necessary at this time.

Kaseya reported that at least 13 African countries, including previously unaffected countries such as Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, confirmed outbreaks of the disease.
