Cuba and China recall Fidel Castro’s contributions to biotechnology

Beijing, Aug 13 (Prensa Latina) Experts, academics, diplomats and scientists from China and Cuba recalled the contributions of historic leader Fidel Castro to bilateral cooperation in biotechnology.

On the occasion of the 98th anniversary of the birth of the maximum leader of the Cuban Revolution, those present met at the joint venture Biotech Pharmaceuticals Limited (BPL) and reviewed the milestones of scientific collaboration.

Speaking to Prensa Latina, Bai Xianhong, president of BPL, underscored Fidel Castro’s vision of the future when in the 1970s and 1980s he urged the island’s scientists to engage in biotechnology.

“(Fidel) successfully brought laboratory results to industrialization, this not only provided medicines and vaccines to the Cuban people, promoted advances in medical care in Cuba, but also laid the foundation for the development of biotechnology,” he said.

Bai described GLP as the largest collaboration between China and Cuba in the field of the biopharmaceutical industry and in this regard, he recalled the success of China’s first humanized monoclonal antibody.

Cuban Ambassador to China, Alberto Blanco, assured that bilateral ties in the biotechnology sector have been developing in a growing and satisfactory manner for 20 years.

“The high level of political relations between our two countries and the endearing friendship between our peoples allow us to continue strengthening a strategic alliance with important results and great potential,” he added.
