Palestinian party accuses Netanyahu of preventing agreement on Gaza

Ramallah, Aug 13 (Prensa Latina) The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of delaying a ceasefire agreement due to personal political interests.

The left-wing organization stated in a statement that Netanyahu does not care about the fate of Israeli prisoners held in the Gaza Strip by Palestinian militias. “Despite the steps taken and the progress in the negotiations for a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, Netanyahu added new conditions that we will not accept,” it stressed.

The PFLP highlighted recent statements made by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who estimated that an absolute victory in the Gaza Strip is impossible. “His words confirm the failure of the occupation army,” the group said.

The Times of Israel stated last week that in recent months Netanyahu prevented on several occasions reaching an agreement to stop the fighting in Gaza and advance on a prisoner exchange with the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

The newspaper quoted three officials from the mediating countries (Qatar, Egypt and the United States) who revealed details about the indirect talks between Israel and Hamas, who claimed that assurances given to the mediators by Israeli security chiefs in the talks were abandoned again and again after consulting Netanyahu, who kept demanding new conditions.

The Israeli negotiating team suffers from lack of credibility in the talks, the sources said. One of those interviewed stressed that at several points, Israeli officials gave assurances about elements of the deal they were willing to accept, only to back away from the commitments because of Netanyahu’s stance.

Numerous politicians and relatives of Israeli prisoners have accused the prime minister for months of hindering talks to prevent the fracture of the right-wing coalition in power.
