Argentine university front continues on strike

Buenos Aires, Aug 13 (Prensa Latina) The Union Front of National Universities is carrying out the second day of a 72-hour strike to demand salary increases and denounce the adjustment of the Argentine Government.

Members of the Federation of University Teachers (CONADU), the Historical CONADU, the Confederation of Education Workers, and other organizations joined the strike and initiatives to reveal the sector’s situation in a context marked by a socioeconomic crisis.

The organizations also requested an update on retirements, the Teachers’ Incentive Fund restitution, and the elimination of the income tax.

The protesters issued a joint statement denouncing the loss of workers’ purchasing power, while accumulated inflation from December 2023 to June 2024 amounts to 125.5 percent. They also accused the Executive of refusing to negotiate and trying to hide the deterioration in wages and working conditions.

The State Workers Association (ATE) expressed its support for the strike urging the entire popular field to defend education as a space for promoting knowledge and social mobility.

ATE said in a statement that “the precipitous fall in real wages in the sector was aggravated by the sustained adjustment carried out by Javier Milei’s Executive”, and considered the proposals to increase salaries by three percent in August and two in September to be insufficient.
