Caribbean watchful, tropical disturbance likely to become a hurricane

Washington, Aug 12 (Prensa Latina) A disturbance in the Atlantic is moving westward at just over 40 kilometers per hour, a system with possibilities of becoming a tropical depression in the next few hours, the National Hurricane Center warned.

Located near latitude 14.6 North, longitude 54.3 West, it will move west-northwestward near the Leeward Islands late tonight or Tuesday and will approach the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and later Puerto Rico.

The potential fifth cyclone of the current season, which began on June 1, has maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour with stronger gusts, the scientific entity said.

In addition, some strengthening is forecast for the next few days and it could become a tropical storm as it approaches Sotavento.

Meteorologists predicted the present cycle of cyclones and hurricanes, which will last until November 30, to be very active.

Tropical Storm Alberto was the first to circulate in the region, followed by Hurricane Beryl, which became a category 5 hurricane. This was followed by Cyclone Chis and, at the end of July, Debby, the second hurricane to reach category 1.

If this disturbance transitions to a storm, it would be named Ernesto.
