La Paz, Aug 12 (Prensa Latina) For Bolivia, the proposal for a referendum on hydrocarbons, presidential re-election, and legislative seats is convenient to jointly avoid conflict scenarios encouraged by political actors with the population, an official source stated.

“There is no need to be afraid to consult the people, there is no need to be afraid of what decisions are made jointly with the people, nothing is more democratic than (…) carrying out this type of consultation with the Bolivian people on issues of national interest”, assured the Minister of the Presidency, María Nela Prada.

The minister reflected in an interview about the proposal formulated on August 6 by President Luis Arce to take the hydrocarbon subsidy, seats in the Plurinational Legislative Assembly, and presidential re-election to a referendum.

Sectors of the political opposition and civic committees related to this sector criticized and rejected this initiative, arguing that decisions from the Executive Branch would be transferred to the people.

Another of the topics proposed for the referendum has to do with presidential re-election.

The issue “aims for us to have the ability to debate among ourselves and as a country, so that, based on that and the decisions we make as a nation, we choose the best path in a sovereign manner, and it is the one that is followed by all of the organs of our Plurinational State of Bolivia,” Prada said.
