Mexico-Chile Free Trade Agreement marks 25

Santiago, Chile, Aug 9 (Prensa Latina) Chile and Mexico on Friday took stock of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries, signed 25 years ago, and analyzed its modernization during the working visit of Mexican Foreign Secretary, Alicia Bárcena.

Bárcena held a private meeting and later an extended meeting with Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren, in which they discussed the leading issues of the bilateral relations and the FTA, which entered into force in August 1999, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed.

“I believe that with the modernization that we are going to give to the FTA, we will have the opportunity to include innovative small and medium-sized women’s businesses,” the Mexican foreign secretary said.

She informed that bilateral trade has grown significantly, reaching 3.4 billion dollars last year.

Bárcena and Van Klaveren also chaired the 8th meeting of the Strategic Partnership Council, the highest-level mechanism for setting the bilateral agenda.

During the meeting, Van Klaveren emphasized that the two countries have a long history of relations and a full agenda in all areas.

During her visit to this country, Bárcena was received by President Gabriel Boric and participated in a ministerial meeting of the Pacific Alliance, composed of Colombia, Chile, Mexico, and Peru.
