Ecuador’s Parliament analyzes report on Villavicencio’s murder

Quito, Aug 6 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador's National Assembly (Parliament) is analyzing a report on Tuesday that blames the Government of former President Guillermo Lasso for the murder of former presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in August 2023.

Almost a year after the crime, the legislative plenary session is looking into the results of the analysis of an occasional commission formed to investigate the politician’s death.

The document approved by the legislative board stated that there could have been “criminal and administrative violations” on the part of Lasso, former Interior Minister Juan Zapata, and the leadership of the National Police at the time.

According to the statement, the former president failed in his duty to maintain internal order and public safety, resulting in a crisis of insecurity that led to Villavicencio’s murder on August 9, 2023.

Last month, Ecuador’s Court of Criminal Guarantees sentenced Edwin Angulo, aka Invisible, and Laura Castillo, who were considered the perpetrators and accomplices of the crime, respectively, to 34 years in prison for the murder.

Villavicencio was shot several times as he left a campaign rally in Quito just 11 days before the first round of the 2023 presidential election.
