Egypt denies existence of operational tunnels on the border with Gaza

Cairo, Aug 6 (Prensa Latina) Egypt once again rejected Israeli information about the alleged existence of operational tunnels linking the country and the Gaza Strip used by Palestinian militias to smuggle weapons and goods.

In recent days, Israeli media outlets published images of what appears to be the entrance to a three-meter-high tunnel that might allow the passage of small vehicles claiming that it connects Gaza with Egypt, although without providing evidence.

A high-level Egyptian source rejected this version in statements to the Al-Qahera News network. The Israeli press reports are an attempt by Israel to “escape from its failures” in the Gaza Strip, he estimated, explaining to the network that the Israeli authorities did not provide any evidence of operational corridors on the border. “Israel is making references to closed tunnels in Gaza to spread misleading news for political purposes,” he stressed.

In April, the head of the Egyptian State Information Service, Diaa Rashwan, assured that Egypt has full control over its territory and rejected Israeli accusations of alleged trafficking of arms and ammunition to Gaza. “Some 1,500 tunnels that connected the coastal enclave with our country were destroyed during the last decade and the border wall was reinforced”, the official revealed then.
