As reported today by the state-run KCNA news agency, this is “a new key offensive weapon” that represents “a great leap in the modernization and strengthening of the army.”
After reviewing the weapons, the secretary general of the Workers’ Party and chairman of the State Affairs Committee called them “a powerful and cherished sword” for defending national sovereignty.
Kim noted that the ceremony was being held at a time when the country is facing severe damage caused by floods in the northwest, so the delivery of the launchers reflects the will to “firmly push forward the strengthening of the nation’s defense capabilities” under any circumstances.
The mobilization of these military means coincides with a worsening of relations with South Korea due to joint exercises with the United States and Japan, and other actions by Seoul, such as the sending of hot air balloons to the DPRK with subversive propaganda.
The ceremony, held Sunday at the Mirim training ground in Pyongyang, included a parade of the missile units that received the new armaments, under the watchful eye of the supreme commander of the People’s Army.
