Russia: CIS is not affected by Ukraine’s withdrawal from agreements

Moscow, Aug 2 (Prensa Latina) Ukraine's withdrawal from more than 100 agreements in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) does not affect the work of the post-Soviet alliance, stated Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

To date, Ukraine has notified the CIS executive committee of its withdrawal from 134 community agreements but remains a party to “more than 200 documents, mainly, of a commercial, economic, social and humanitarian nature that are of practical interest to it”, Zakharova wrote on Telegram.

“It is a Ukrainian matter, of course, but we have repeatedly said that these measures harm, first of all, the interests of the Ukrainian people, because the CIS is a format oriented towards the needs of the people and the promotion of cooperation in areas of vital importance,” the functionary said.

Ukraine’s withdrawal from more than 100 agreements within the CIS framework “does not affect the multifaceted cooperation between those member states that effectively look after the well-being of their citizens and see the unquestionable advantages of regional integration in the most diverse areas”, the diplomat added.

The CIS was founded in 1991 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and includes Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan as member states.

Georgia left the organization in 2009; Moldova intends to withdraw before the end of 2024; and Ukraine and Turkmenistan legally maintain member-state status in numerous community agreements.
