Russia calls to respect Venezuelan people’s will in elections

Moscow, Jul 31 (Prensa Latina) Russia calls to respect the will of the Venezuelan people expressed in the recently held presidential elections, said today the deputy director of the Department of Information and Press of the Foreign Ministry, Andrei Nastasin.

The victory of the president, Nicolas Maduro is sealed, and the people of Venezuela made their choice, so we believe that this must be respected and unfounded accusations and attempts to influence the future course of the political situation in that country must cease, Nastasin told reporters.

On Sunday, the Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the elections with 51.2 percent of the votes and indicated his opponent, opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, obtained 44.2 percent, with a total of 95.4 percent turnout.

The Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD, center) ignored the results and announced Gonzalez as ‘president elect’.

Some countries such as Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay refused to recognize Maduro’s reelection, which has already provoked Caracas to announce the immediate withdrawal of diplomatic personnel.

Since Monday, street actions have been registered in several parts of Venezuela in rejection of the results of Sunday’s elections.

The government described the incidents as ‘terrorist acts’ and sabotage promoted by the extreme right.
