EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs visits Vietnam

Hanoi, Jul 31 (Prensa Latina) The high representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, will conclude an official visit to Vietnam.

Borrell was received this Tuesday by the Vietnamese president, To Lam, who thanked the visitor for attending the state funeral of the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), Nguyen Phu Trong, who died on July 19th at the age of 80 after a period of serious illness and due to his advanced age.

Lam confirmed that the EU is an essential partner of Vietnam. He expressed his satisfaction with the recent positive development of bilateral ties, evidenced by the increase of delegations and high-level meetings and the effective compliance with numerous agreements, cooperation, and dialogue mechanisms.

The president also highlighted that after four years of implementation, the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement has created new momentum for trade and investment, making Vietnam the EU’s largest trading partner among the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The head of state also demanded that the EU maintain the Official Development Assistance and support Vietnam in implementing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), strengthening cooperation in cybersecurity, maritime security, prevention and control of crises, natural disasters, and crimes.

On the other hand, Borrell said that the EU considers Vietnam an important partner in the region and one of the important actors in current and future international relations, and predicted that the ties between both parties will develop increasingly stronger and deeper for mutual benefit.

The representative of the European Union was received on Tuesday by the secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and the head of its Foreign Affairs Commission, Le Hoai Trung, with whom he discussed some guidelines and measures to improve the efficiency of the cooperation.

Borrell also held talks with the head of Vietnamese diplomacy, Bui Thanh Son, who reiterated his belief that this visit will create important momentum to strongly promote the comprehensive partnership and cooperation between Vietnam and the EU in the near future.
