Colombia reactivates three-way mechanism against human trafficking

Amazonia-Unida-1
Bogota, Jul 24 (Prensa Latina) The Amazon Triple Border Roundtable for the fight against human trafficking and sexual exploitation, formed by Colombia, Brazil, and Peru, will be reactivated today in Leticia, a thousand kilometers south of this capital.

According to the Colombian Ministry of the Interior, the mechanism will be attended by authorities from the three countries and representatives of the Ticuna, Cocama and Yagua indigenous communities, who have been working to protect lives, liberty, and human dignity within their communities.

The “Mesa de la Triple Frontera Amazónica” against human trafficking and sexual exploitation was born more than 15 years ago, thanks to the support of civil society organizations and international cooperation, but has been inactive since 2019.

Among its objectives is to provide an articulated response between the authorities of the three countries to the serious situation that has been occurring in the Amazonian region and, additionally, to specify and implement an action plan to protect the human rights of the population.

The meeting, called “The Amazon United: Colombia, Brazil, Peru: Against Trafficking in Persons”, plans to re-establish the necessary coordination between national, regional, and local authorities of the participating nations to make progress in prevention, attention, and prosecution of these crimes.
