Tinubu was re-elected during the 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held this weekend in this capital. He has held this position since July 2023.

The Nigerian news agency announced that Tinubu appointed Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and his Togolese counterpart, Faure Gnassingbe, as special envoys to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic. The three countries formed the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States on Saturday.

Political observers stressed this Monday that the Senegalese president favors having a dialogue with these three nations to reconcile the parties.

The Confederation will be, according to its members, a political, military, and economic union, which had already been announced in September 2023 due to the sanctions imposed on them by ECOWAS, given the seizure of power by the military forces in these three countries. Presidents Assimi Goita (Mali), Ibrahim Traore (Burkina Faso), and Abdourahamane Tiani (Niger) on Saturday signed agreements on security pacts, the economic, monetary, and social spheres, and established the new alliance.
