At a meeting of the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Quito, the Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility referred to the relevance of the Summit to strengthen international alliances and promote sustainable development in the region.
Sommerfeld did not specify the heads of state or government who, according to her, confirmed their participation, although she did declare that Spain is among them.
The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, announced last December that the southern city of Cuenca, in the province of Azuay, would be the headquarters of the 29th Iberoamerican Summit.
On the other hand, local media indicate that the chancellor referred to the opposition’s intention of promoting a political trial against her, after the assault on the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest former vice president Jorge Glas.
She expressed feeling honored to have received the trust of President Noboa to hold the position of head of Foreign Affairs and that is how she will feel for as long as he decides.
Chancellor Sommerfeld is questioned by political groups in the National Assembly (Parliament) as a result of the crisis with Mexico, a country that broke diplomatic relations after the assault on her legation.
