Colombia thanks Cuba, calls for its removal from US unilateral list

Asuncion, Jun 28 (Prensa Latina) Colombia on Friday demanded Cuba's removal from Washington's States Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list and called for the lifting of unilateral and extraterritorial measures against Cuba.

In his speech at the 54th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), held in Asuncion, Uruguay, Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo remarked that the demand corresponds to his country’s conviction to defend peace as the main democratic value.

Murillo underscored, “the State will always be grateful for Cuba’s support and efforts to contribute to the search for peace in Colombia.”

The FM recalled that Cuba helped with the Peace Agreement with the extinct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP), and is currently contributing to the negotiation of agreements with the National Liberation Army within the framework of the Government’s total peace policy.

“Colombia, from its steadfast conviction of having peace as its main democratic value, and from this forum, insists and requests to exclude Cuba from the States Sponsors of Terrorism list and also the measures that are unilateral and extraterritorial,” Murillo noted.

In another part of his speech, the head of Colombian diplomacy pointed out that integration is the hallmark of Latin American identity, for which Colombia reaffirms its dedication to strengthen cooperation and building unity in the region.

“All the countries of the Americas must be in this forum, those who left must return, this is how unity is built from the regional and hemispheric difference in the current global turmoil,” he said.

Murillo considered that the countries should focus on working together to make peace with nature and seek regional electrical and energy interconnection, the development of clean energies, and speed up digital transformations, while strengthening democratic values.
