In a statement, the UNSC strongly condemned the incident, by recalling that terrorism constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.

The UNSC in charge of maintaining peace and security in the world insisted on the pressing need to hold accountable perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these acts and bring them to justice.

In this regard, it urged States to actively cooperate with the Government of the Russian Federation and all other relevant authorities.

“Any act of terrorism is criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of its motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed,” the text remarked.

UNSC members reaffirmed the need to fight off terrorism in accordance with the UN Charter and other obligations under international law, as well as threats to international peace and security caused by such acts.

According to press reports, unidentified gunmen opened fire on Sunday at several places of worship and a police traffic checkpoint in two towns in Dagestan.

The extremists set fire to two Orthodox churches, a synagogue and a Traffic Police post.
