Colombian Presidency to help clarify allegations of eavesdropping

Bogota, Jun 24 (Prensa Latina) The Presidency of Colombia issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to provide the necessary information in a transparent and prompt manner to clarify the reports on alleged eavesdropping in the country's Constitutional Court.

According to the information released, since the alleged wiretapping operation was made public, an investigation was requested to internal control and internal disciplinary control of the entity to determine irregular circumstances in the processes of the offices of the Secretariat of Communications and Press and by the Technology Directorate of the Presidency.

It also pointed out that formal contact was established with the competent authorities to make themselves available within the framework of the ongoing investigation.

It is crucial to clarify that the activities of the Technology Directorate and the Communications and Press Secretariat do not include practices such as profiling, monitoring or interception, all of which are absolutely condemnable in a democracy. This government has been a victim of such activities in the past and is firmly opposed to them, the note said.

It added that President Gustavo Petro has been emphatic that this type of actions are not allowed, are totally illegal and any official who is involved in any of these practices will have to answer to justice.
