On X, Dr. Ghebreyesus noted that among patients are people with trauma, cancer, cardiac and mental health disorders.
Dr. Ghebreyesus stressed that after the closure early last month of the Rafah crossing bordering Egypt, no patients managed to leave Gaza.
On the grounds of eliminating a Hamas stronghold, the Israeli army occupied the crossing and launched a ground operation against the neighboring city of Rafah, where over one million Palestinians were sheltering at the time.
The operation was heavily criticized by the UN and the international community for the humanitarian consequences for the population and the closure of the crossing, which for seven months was Gaza’s only window to the world for the entry of vital goods.
