The director of Km0, Mari Narváez, said this Wednesday that she will address the situation of state violence that, in the Puerto Rican colonial context, has become even more precarious since the approval by the United States Congress of the Promise Law in 2016.
Likewise, she will highlight how this situation has affected civil rights with Washington’s imposition of the Fiscal Oversight Board (JSF), which controls finances in the Puerto Rican archipelago, apart from the impact on individuals and families due to police violence.
The United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization of the United Nations, an organization created in 1961, is in charge of monitoring and promoting the decolonization process of non-autonomous territories under the administration of colonial powers such as the United States, with the purpose of putting an end to colonialism.
The mandate of the Special Committee of 24, as it is also called, is to examine the implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples (resolution 1514 XV) of the Assembly, of December 14, 1960 , and make suggestions and recommendations on its progress and scope.
The Decolonization Committee is currently made up of 29 countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Chile, China, Congo, Ivory Coast, Cuba, Dominica, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Fiji, Grenada, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq and Mali .
As well as Nicaragua, Papua New Guinea, Russian Federation, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sierra Leone, Syria, East Timor, Tunisia, Tanzania and Venezuela.
