Indian capital battles between excessive heat and water crisis

india-ola-de-calor-1
New Delhi, Jun 18 (Prensa Latina) New Delhi inhabitants are going through a critical situation between a growing water crisis and sweltering heat, something usual at this time in this region of India.

Dehli Minister of Water Resources Atishi requested support from the government of Haryana to release water and alleviate the situation.

In a press conference, the official referred to the shortage of water in the Munak canal, which is responsible for transferring the precious liquid from Haryana and Delhi, due to the low levels of the Yamuna river.

Atishi pointed out that officials from Delhi traveled to Haryana to meet with representatives of the Irrigation Department of that neighboring locality, which has control over this distribution channel.

This year, with temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius, the water crisis in Delhi has again emerged as a pressing issue that has forced officials to file a petition in the Supreme Court.

The petition urged neighboring states such as Haryana and Himachal Pradesh to provide additional water to alleviate Delhi’s growing shortage.

In an initial response, the Supreme Court recommended the Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB), set up to resolve inter-state incongruities over water, to intercede in the matter.
