Russia analyzes US-Ukraine security agreement

Moscow, Jun 14 (Prensa Latina) The United States will decide through internal consultations the future of Ukraine in cases of emergency, the Russian Academy of Sciences pointed out.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his US counterpart, Joe Biden, signed a security agreement on Thursday on the sidelines of the G7 summit.

“As part of a security agreement with Ukraine, the United States commits to holding consultations only in case of any emergency situation for Ukraine, while any future president may completely abandon this agreement,” stressed the head of the Center for Military Affairs and Political Studies at the Institute of the United States and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladimir Batyuk.

“According to the White House, this does not include any obligation on the part of Washington to use its forces to protect Ukraine, nor does it contain monetary obligations on the American side,” Batyuk said. “From a purely legal point of view, as per this agreement, the United States can discuss any emergency situation that may arise in Ukraine’s foreign policy. Furthermore, this agreement is not an international treaty, it is an executive order,” he said.

Batyuk said that even the Biden administration does not want to assume excessive responsibilities with respect to Ukraine and the obligations with Kiev are significantly lower than those that Washington has with Israel. “It is necessary to point out the colossal influence of the Israel lobby in the United States and the sentiment in the so-called Bible Belt of the United States, where Israel is seen as a State created by God, a sacred State,” he noted.
