According to a message published by the Royal House of Belgium on social networks after the audience of the monarch with the head of Government, the leader will keep his functions until a new Executive is set up.
The press release noted that “the King accepted the resignation of his Government and entrusted him with the management of current affairs.”
On Sunday, De Croo communicated his intention to resign as leader of the Executive after the defeat of his party, which finished fifth behind the New Flemish Alliance, N-VA, the far-right Vlaams Belang, the socialist party, Vooruit, and the Christian Democrats CD&V.
In statements to reporters after the election results were published, he said, “It is a particularly difficult night for us, we have lost. As of tomorrow I resign from my post as Prime Minister, but the Liberals are strong and will return.”
