Dominican historian praises Prensa Latina’s loyalty to truth

Santo Domingo, Jun 10 (Prensa Latina) Dominican historian and educator Luis De León praised Prensa Latina's loyalty to truthful information, not only about the Cuban Revolution, but also about the political, cultural and social reality in Latin America and the world.

De León, president of the José Martí Extracurricular Chair at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), congratulated the Havana-based news agency a few days before its 65th anniversary, and acknowledged its function as an alternative to the media monopoly.

Prensa Latina, identified by the acronym PL, was founded on June 16, 1959, at the initiative of revolutionary leaders Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara, who were aware of the importance of having a media outlet that would truthfully disseminate the events taking place in Cuba after the triumph of the Revolution.

The politician, writer and cultural agent noted that the news agency is an example of dissemination of information attached to the historical and social truth of the Latin American and Caribbean peoples “and an instrument to let the world know that a new world of justice and peace is possible.”

We welcome the fact that Prensa Latina is the difference in the face of disinformation and manipulation of information to disorient the peoples and especially the political, social and economic sectors, De León said.

He considered that PL is essential in this stage of struggle by Latin American progressivism, when the hegemonic countries, especially the United States, use the media at the service of the right wing as the center of their campaigns to overthrow governments and foment wars, while hiding the realities of the regimes imposed by their own fallacies.
