China opposes escalation of tensions on Korean Peninsula

china-cancilleria-1
Beijing, Jun 5 (Prensa Latina) China is committed to maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and opposes any words or deeds that might escalate tensions there, the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated on Wednesday.

Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Mao Ning noted that keeping peace and stability in the region “serves the common interests of all relevant parties.”

Upon noting that the situation on the peninsula is tense and the confrontation between the parties has intensified in the last few days, the spokeswoman pointed out that China is concerned about the current developments.

Mao Ning’s remarks came after South Korea announced the complete suspension of the September 19 military agreement with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) “until mutual trust between the two parties is restored.”

The South Korean army later revealed that it had developed a plan to resume exercises and drills in the land, sea, and air buffer zone between the two Koreas.
