The developed nations, great predators of natural resources, continue to ignore it.

Thirty-two years ago, Fidel said, ‘Tens of millions of men, women and children die every year in the Third World as a result of this, more than in each of the two world wars.’

The causes of that scenario remain, desertification, deforestation and soil salinization affect the land’s capacity to produce food, and therefore hinder the developing countries’ sustainability.

At the same time, the pollution of the seas and drinking water sources gradually turns this resource into a deficit when the demand from agriculture and the world’s large population centers grows.

In view of this situation, Cuba implements environmental policies such as the “Life Task,” a State Plan to mitigate the effects of climate change, which cannot be different in a country that defends clean technologies and the sustainability of the exploitation of natural resources.

In Cuba, in addition to the laws that protect nature, teaching programs include environmental education as a guarantee that the new generations will be consistent with the resources they will inherit. It does not mean that everything has been done in terms of environmental protection and education in Cuba, but it does mean that there is a political will to use the few resources available to the government to contribute to taking care of everyone’s only home, the Earth.

The economies and governments that control world consumption bear the biggest responsibility for preventing the continuation of the last paragraph of Fidel’s speech at the Earth Summit, ‘An important biological species is at risk of disappearing due to the rapid and progressive liquidation of its natural conditions of life: mankind.’
